The Declaration notes that it should rely on traditional practitioners as needed, suitably trained socialy and technically to work as a health team and to respond to the expressed health needs of the community, and that adequate resources should be put toward these services. It calls upon the utilization of traditional products where relevant and notes the need for further research. It states: "Traditional medical practitioners and birth attendants are found in most societies. They are often part of the local community, culture and traditions, and continue to have high social standing in many places, exerting considerable influence on local health practices. With the support of the formal health system, these indigenous practitioners can become important allies in organizing efforts to improve the health of the community. Some communities may select them as community health workers. It is therefore well worth while exploring the possibilities of engaging them in primary health care and of training them accordingly.
