This presentation provides an update on ongoing efforts to responsibly integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) into Traditional and Complementary Medicine (TCM) under the Global Centre for Traditional Medicine (GCTM) and the WHO-International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Focus Group on AI for Health. Established in 2018, this international multi-stakeholder platform gathers over 100 experts to develop global benchmarking frameworks and policy recommendations for the safe, ethical, and effective use of AI in health. Within this initiative, a dedicated topic group on AI and TCM—led by the Ministry of AYUSH—has been formed to explore digital innovation in traditional medicine. A key output of this collaboration is a policy brief under development, focusing on the potential, challenges, and necessary safeguards for AI applications in TCM. The draft includes background evidence, policy priorities, and guidance tailored for Ministries of Health. It is being developed by an expert group of over 15 members through a series of international meetings. Additionally, this work is aligned with Workstream 4 of the GCTM Workplan and has been highlighted through expert panels, exhibitions, and dialogues during the GCTM Summit, reinforcing the commitment to bringing AI innovation to the people through a traditional medicine lens.
