The Instituto de Investigaciones Fármaco Bioquímicas (IIFB) of the Universidad Mayor de San Andrés has conducted numerous research projects on medicinal plants and antiparasitic biomolecules, supported by national and international programs. Key initiatives include studies on biomolecules of medicinal and industrial interest (2013–2020, UMSA-ASDI), bioprospecting of Amazonian antiparasitic species with the Tacana community (2015–2018), colorant characterization from Renealmia breviscapa (2015–2017), and the validation of the Tacana pharmacopoeia against Giardia trophozoites (2014–2015). Other significant projects focus on the use of Evanta for cutaneous leishmaniasis (2007–2012, UMSA-ASDI), deworming programs for rural schoolchildren (2010–2013), and regional flora research for anticancer and antiparasitic drug development (2001–2004, in collaboration with the OAS and other Latin American countries). The institute has also contributed to the creation of an antifungal cream based on Guarani plant knowledge (1996), promoted environmental conservation through ethnopharmacology (1993–1996), and explored the bioactive ingredients of Bolivian medicinal plants with the support of the AvH Foundation (1992).
