Expanding Healthcare Access and Improving Provider Well-being: Complementary and Integrative Health Provider Skills Trainings in the VHA. To improve access to Complementary and Integrative Health (CIH) approaches mandated by VHA Directive 1137, the Veterans Health Administration developed internal skills training programs. Virtual and in-person trainings were offered for mindfulness, clinical hypnosis, guided imagery, yoga, acupressure, and battlefield acupuncture. Preliminary analysis shows a rise in facilities offering CIH services and an increase in trained providers and patient encounters between 2020 and 2022. Despite challenges, such as resource limitations and COVID-19 disruptions, the number of CIH encounters continued to grow. Participants also reported positive personal outcomes. Expansion efforts are ongoing to cover all mandated CIH approaches within the VA system.
