Guatemala’s Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance (MSPAS) has developed policies to integrate traditional medicine and cultural relevance into its national health system. This approach recognizes Indigenous health systems, phytotherapy, and the importance of cultural perspectives in health care. In 2002, the Traditional and Alternative Medicine Program was launched to recognize diverse health approaches. In 2009, the Unit for the Health Care of Indigenous Peoples and Interculturality was created to institutionalize intercultural relevance in healthcare. In 2023, the unit was renamed to align with broader organizational changes. The Ministry promotes culturally relevant guidelines, medicinal plant use, and medicinal gardens. Efforts include hiring intercultural health facilitators to enhance respectful and inclusive care aligned with Guatemala’s multicultural and multilingual identity.
