Integration of Natural and Traditional Medicine in the Cuban National Health System

Cuba has fully integrated Natural and Traditional Medicine (NTM) into its National Health System (NHS) as a recognized medical specialty with a holistic and integrative approach. NTM includes practices like acupuncture, phytotherapy, apitherapy, homeopathy, ozone therapy, Ayurveda, and others. A strong political, legal, and regulatory framework supports its development, beginning with a national program launched in 1997. NTM is applied across all three levels of care, especially in primary care (88%), and was included in Cuba’s COVID-19 response protocol. 105 natural products in the official medicine list, with production steadily increasing. Postgraduate specialization in NTM for doctors since 1995, active in 12 provinces, with 376 specialists by 2022. NTM is part of medical curricula and public health research, with 51 projects and 11 clinical trials related to natural products.
