The National Policy on Complementary and Integrative Practices (PNPIC), established in 2006, integrates Traditional, Complementary and Integrative Medicine (TCIM) into Brazil’s Unified Health System (SUS), especially within Primary Health Care (PHC). It includes 29 recognized practices, incorporating complex medical systems and therapeutic resources. Over 17 years, the Brazilian Ministry of Health has advanced the policy through cross-sector collaboration, capacity building, and dissemination of best practices. Traditional Brazilian medicine, rooted in Afro-Brazilian and Indigenous ancestries and spiritualities, plays a central role. Supporting policies, such as the National Policy for Comprehensive Health of the Black Population and the National Policy for Popular Education in Health (PNEPS-SUS), address health equity by recognizing racism and valuing cultural knowledge and participation, aiming to shift from biomedical models to more holistic, inclusive care.
