Unani medicine is a form of healing with philosophical foundations dating back to the fifth century BCE and the writings of Hippocrates. It is widely practiced across the Middle East, South and Southeast Asia and North Africa, and is increasingly popular in other regions. Over the last 120 years, the expansion of Unani—including in research and product development, training of practitioners and accessibility of services—has been supported by a number of private and public sector institutions. Pakistan is a country in which Unani is widely practiced and integrated through efforts of both the private and public sectors. The Pakistan Government approved the Unani, Ayurvedic and Homeopathic Practitioners Act in 1965, with a Board of Registration to ensure professionalization, integration and a foundation for clinical research. Today, Unani is fully integrated into the Pakistan health system, with robust governance of the traditional and alternative medicines space, and numerous policies and regulations. In this display you will be learning about Unani and two important private sector actors advancing the integration of Unani into Pakistan’s health system: Hamdard and Qarshi.
