In response to the growing need for supportive care in oncology, the Lucca Public Hospital established an Integrative Oncology Outpatient Clinic (Regional Resolution No. 1255/2009). This clinic offers an interdisciplinary approach where an oncologist and a specialist in complementary medicine (CM) collaboratively provide evidence-based dietary guidance and qualified information on the safe use of CM, including their potential interactions with anti-cancer drugs. The service follows pre-defined, simple integrative protocols designed to mitigate adverse effects of radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and hormone therapy in patients with solid tumors. Therapeutic interventions such as acupuncture and homeopathy are applied, particularly to manage symptoms like hot flashes and fatigue, with the overarching aim of improving patients’ quality of life during and after treatment. This model represents a pioneering example of how integrative oncology can be embedded within public health systems, offering personalized, safe, and patient-centered supportive care.
